Hurricane Matthew is now wreaking havoc along the East Coast. Let’s be praying for those who have been and will be affected.
Last night’s news focused on the need for East Coast residents to evacuate as soon as possible. It also addressed the fact that many will “ride out” the storm, even some who live in the most threatened areas.
One man said that he is staying behind because of his Harley-Davidson. That’s right, a motorcycle. He feared the bike being damaged or lost in the storm, so he’s bringing it inside his modest house and keeping it protected. I guess it hasn’t occurred to the man that his Harley won’t do him any good if he ends up dead.
I hope that the man’s error in judgment does not prove fatal. But it does illustrate the truth that some people let go of the most important in order to hold on to the insignificant. This man is potentially letting go of his life in order to hold on to his Harley.
Jesus famously asked, “What will a man give in exchange for his soul?” There are things on earth that hold material and emotional value for each of us. Nothing, though, is as valuable as our eternal salvation. Even the whole world is nothing compared to one soul (Matthew 16:26).
When our time has come, will we be found clutching something worthless? Jesus let go of everything belonging to Him in order to provide our salvation (Philippians 2:6-7). Are we willing to do the same in order to receive it? Be blessed and be a blessing by letting go of everything in order to gain Jesus. And please pray for everyone affected by Hurricane Matthew.
